Well-bred filly Thooza maintained her perfect record when she tripped south to successfully resume at New Plymouth.
Trained for us at Cambridge by Tony Pike, the Almanzor three-year-old only had a small field to deal with over 1200 metres and she had no trouble accounting for her older opposition.
Thooza has been patiently handled and was put aside after winning on debut at Te Rapa last season and had a quiet trial at Pukekohe to prepare for her seasonal return.
She jumped well to lead early before settling second and was a willing partner for apprentice Lily Sutherland in the run home to forge clear by two and a-half lengths.
We purchased Thooza from breeder The Oaks Stud’s draft at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale for $155,000.
She is out of the Darci Brahma mare Sea Goddess, who won on three occasions, and is a daughter of the seven-time Group 1 winner Seachange.
It is also the family of the G1 Levin Classic winner Keepa Cruisin and last season’s Australian Group 2 winners Antrim Coast, also runner-up in the G1 New Zealand Derby, and the precocious Storm Boy.
