Exciting young talent Excenia overcame the outside gate at Bendigo to win with authority at the second time of asking.
Prepared by Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained representative drifted back and wide before picking up ground near the turn and our filly unleashed powerfully in the run home to triumph by a comfortable three-quarters of a length at the end of 1100 metres.
“She’s really taking everything in her stride and showed a good turn of foot,” rider Michael Dee said.
“She was well-placed by the team to get the chocolates and some confidence.”
Dee had also been aboard the juvenile daughter of Exceed And Excel when she finished an encouraging sixth on debut in the Listed Festival Stakes at Flemington.
We purchased Excenia for A$250,000 out of Newgate’s draft at last year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale with McEvoy Mitchell Racing and Belmont Bloodstock also signing the ticket.
She is the first foal of the Deep Field mare Xilong, who was a talented performer and won the G2 Euclase Stakes, the Listed Twilight Glow Stakes and finished third in the G1 Surround Stakes.
“Her mother could have been a real star for me but just didn’t have the temperament so big thanks to Brendan and Jo Lindsay for purchasing this one and giving her to us,” Tony McEvoy said.
“She’s obviously a talented filly and got plenty more to come.”
Excenia is a granddaughter of the G3 Silver Shadow Stakes winner and multiple top-flight placegetter Pane In The Glass and the family of G2 Linlithgow Stakes winner and sire Gold Brose.
