Multiple stakes performer Talisker has been knocking on the door this preparation and the son of our young stallion Embellish duly capped off his consistent form line with victory at New Plymouth.
He had placed in all three of his four-year-old outings, including a third in the G3 Phar Lap Trophy at Trentham, before comfortably putting away his open handicap rivals over 1400 metres.
Runner-up in last season’s G1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas, the Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson-trained representative was expected to be on the pace but drifted toward the back of the field.
He improved widest near the turn and powered home to score with authority for rider Craig Grylls.
“We were going to be a lot closer, but it was a hot speed and he settled nicely and thought the job was done 200 metres out and pricked his ears,” he said.
Talisker has now has the tidy record of four victories and seven placings from his 15 appearances.
Owned by the Te Akau Classic Edition Racing Partnership, he is a son of the Redoute’s Choice mare Glenkinchie whose dam is a half-sister to the five-time Group 1 winner Racing To Win.
