Impending mare Ominous delivered a welcome breakthrough victory at Te Aroha off the back of a couple of runs this preparation that had strongly hinted she was an imminent winner in waiting. Our four-year-old had returned from a five month break to finish runner-up at Tauranga and then had no luck when fifth at Pukekohe where she was parked three wide without cover and was less than two lengths off the winner. The Lance Noble-trained Ominous enjoyed a more comfortable run this time and she duly obliged. She broke well from the 1600 metre start to sit fourth off the rail before rider Warren Kennedy had her into the clear soon after straightening and she rounded off strongly to open her account by a comfortable half a-length.A half-sister to Tavistock’s two-time winner Entitled Princess, Ominous is out of the Redoute’s Choice mare Redoute’s Princess. She is a half-sister to the G3 Rotorua Cup winner The Good Fight and the Listed Aspiration Handicap winner Pravana with their dam the gifted Zabeel mare Pravda. She won eight races including the G2 Taranaki Cup, Group 3 titles in the Chairman’s Handicap and Manion Cup and finished runner-up in the G1 New Zealand Oaks.
